Amazon Eliminates Seller Restocking Fees in Some Cases

Amazon is changing its seller-fulfilled return policy at the end of the month. Sellers whose items are returned in original condition will no longer be able to charge the customer a restocking fee.

"Only items returned out of policy and/or are in used or damaged condition will be eligible for restocking fees," Amazon said.

"In cases where you would like to charge a restocking fee due to a damaged, missing, or a materially different return, you will be required to grade the return item."

In addition, restocking fees greater than or equal to 20% will require sellers to upload a photo of the item.

Amazon said the policy change would help deliver a better returns experience for customers, who in cases where they don't receive a full reimbursement for their returns, want to understand why.

Not surprisingly, sellers are not delighted upon hearing the news. Said one seller of the new policy, "If a Seller has been abusing restocking fees, then deactivate that Seller. Don't hobble all 3Ps."

The new policy goes into effect on September 30, 2020. Read the full announcement on Amazon Seller Central.

Amazon is a mess. They don't support their sellers in any way, heck you can't even get phone support any longer. We took our 2000 unique items and moved them over to Walmart.com who now accepts 3rd party sellers. Walmart partnered with shopify so the transition was easy. We moved our listings to shopify, then over to walmart. We are getting better sales on Walmart's site with great support. Amazon is a "has been" they just don't know it yet.
