Amazon Surveys Sellers on Violation Appeals Process

Amazon's Seller Trust team surveyed sellers on the process for appealing listing violations. This is a sensitive issue for sellers, with some believing marketplaces allow automated "bots" to run amok, leading to mistakes.

Companies have sprung up to offer consulting services to Amazon sellers on creating "plans of action" (POAs) and other tactics to avoid or fix problems.

Amazon's recent survey asked questions such as, "When was the last time you appealed a policy violation for a listing," and "On average, how many appeals do you submit per month?"

One longtime poster on the Amazon seller boards said the survey missed the mark - instead of asking how many appeals a seller makes in a month, the survey should have asked how many restrictions they receive in a month, how many restrictions are incorrect, and how many sellers succeed in getting mistakes corrected.

Amazon indicated what types of problems sellers may have with its appeals process by asking, "When resolving listing violations, please rank the following challenges you experience by dragging each item in order of CHALLENGE, with 1 being the most challenging." It offered the following options from which sellers could select:

- Unclear how I violated the policy
- Large amount of listings that I have to appeal
- Unclear how to appeal
- Did not get notified of the listing violations

It also provided an open-ended question sellers could answer - "What would make it easier/faster for you to appeal listing violations?"

What do you think of Amazon - and other marketplaces' - ability to detect listing violations; the process used to crack down on sellers; and the appeals process?

They are 100% correct, Bots run amok at Amazon, restrictions and violations are common because the bots can't review in real time if there is even a valid reason for them other than a customer using a key word in a message or feedback comment that triggers the policy violation.

Using bots to flag something is fine.. that should triggers a MANUAL REVIEW by a REAL LIFE PERSON from the catalog department (or whatever department) to look into the matter.

We get customers all the time that say "Product Damaged, Shipping Box OK" as a reason to cop a freebie.. Amazon see's that as we sold a used item as new.  We don't even use boxes for packaging.. bubble mailers only so it's always been a bunch of BS.  While not everyone I am sure is a scammer.. there are plenty of people out there that know all they have to say is it arrived damaged to get a free merchandise and a refund.

I had a lady once DEMAND to keep an item it and get a refund.. when I told her no she immediately filed an AtoZ claim and won.

Bunch of BS

SELLERS should be the ones deciding who gets a refund and not be forced to accept returns for any reason.

There should be a way to block buyers on Amazon. There is on Ebay but it is very limited.  Also, Amazon should have in their own algorithm what buyers and/or address's file an inordinate or unusual amount of claims.  Amazon does not care as it does not cost them any "real" money if a buyer "scams" you and they in many cases get the scam money back from manufacturer's.  Returns are an issue for all business's.  Many items even if you return will just be trashed. So if you return for example a baby item, toiletry  or medication it will just be trashed.  This is just a small sample.    More items should be listed as no returns both online and in retail stores.

@byebyeebay

On Ebay we can block up to 5,000 members.  You need more than that?  If so, clean out your list every so often.  If it has several numbers followed by @deleted, then just delete that entry as it means the buyer you previously blocked is no longer a member on Ebay.

Amazon's appeal process on most things is useless.  All too often, no matter what you write, you only get canned messages back that do nothing to help you resolve your issue.  The Customer Service on Amazon, in my experience is even worse than Ebay's and Ebay's is certainly a hot mess too.

Amazon looking to keep customer happy at any cost.  I don't think they really care about third party sellers, other than to find out what moves.
I am tired of purchasing an item on Amazon, have a delivery date, and on that date get notified that it will be delayed and they have no clue when it will be shipped.  Amazon needs to clean up their act -

I quit selling on Amazon, not that I made much money to begin with.  They started removing some of my listings for price gouging.  I'd had the nerve to list some used books in like new condition for $5.99, yes 5 dollars and 99 cents.  Other dealers were selling the same books for $1.99, therefore I was price gouging.  I appealed to no avail.

Good luck to all disgruntled eBay sellers who imagine a much better selling experience on Amazon.  There's a lot I don't like about eBay, but stuff keeps selling and I had to hire some part time help to keep up.

Amazon is a joke. They are getting rid of 3rd party sellers and giving larger Brands exclusive rights, thus creating monopolies, that is why the prices are so high on Amazon.  We moved all of our Amazon inventory to Walmart.com  Walmart welcomed us and now we sell more on Walmart than we ever did on Amazon with none of Amazon's BS. Walmart has been great. Amazon is a has been.
