Amazon Charges Seller Retroactively for Shipping Discrepancies

A reader forwarded us an email they received from Amazon notifying the seller it would be retroactively charging him for discrepancies for items shipped months ago using its shipping-label solution.

The notification from Amazon read in part:

"When you ship products outbound to customers, if the product attributes (dimensions and/or weight) printed on the shipping label do not match the actual dimensions on the shipment, carriers apply an automatic charge or credit for the difference.

"Between September 2022 and November 2022, this automated process did not occur for all orders, and your selling account was not fully billed or credited for the dimension and weight discrepancies."

The reader said there were a few reasons why sellers might not get the dimensions or weight of their packages correct: guessing; intentionally underestimating the weight of their packages; or using the catalog weight supplied by brands they don't own.

It's not unreasonable for Amazon to require sellers to pay for their mistakes, but not catching the problem sooner - and the fact the charges (or credits) come in a new tax year, complicates things enormously.

We're not sure how widespread this is - the way Amazon's notification reads, it appears to have affected more than a single or small group of sellers.

Sellers don't just have a problem with ensuring accurate shipping information on outgoing orders - they must now deal such issues involving returns. As we recently reported, Amazon sellers are now responsible for paying for overage costs on returns -  if a shipping carrier assesses a correction charge on a customer return, sellers must now pay it.

Let us know if Amazon is retroactively charging you for shipping discrepancies and how you plan to handle it - and how it compares to the way other online marketplaces handle such issues.

The Amazon catalog is an effing disaster when it comes to weights and dims. The fact that these clowns at Amazon decided that rather than fixing the problem, we'll just overcharge our "partners" shows how disgusting of a company they really are. We make good money on Amazon, but the way these criminals (Amazon and their employees) treat us is deplorable.

Agreed, and to top it al off if it's an ASIN not created by you there is next to NOTHING you can do to get it corrected, your just stuck with whatever it is unless you want to spend hours if not days or weeks going back and forth with their catalog/retail team to try and get the problem fixed.. yet they want to throw policy violations at you left and right for something THEY screwed up or the original creator of the ASIN had wrong and you can't just create another ASIN if the UPC or ISBN is already in their database.. it's a NIGHTMARE to deal with these crooks ten fold!!

I'm really surprised that so many people continue printing shipping labels online with so many similar problems.  Save a small percentage if you give the shipping company permission to bill you extra with absolutely no limit does not sound like a savings to me!

The main issue with these shipping adjustment charges is that many times they are not accurate and Amazon provides no way to dispute these charges. When purchasing postage, I make sure to enter the actual dimensions and weight and many times the "corrected" dimensions are not even close. For this last round of adjustments from Amazon, the only included the order number, tracking id, Invoiced amount, Seller paid amount & Additional charge. No explanation of what caused the surcharge. I was charged $63.65 for 5 packages some as far back as September.

Amazon is not the only one that does this, I read in the Etsy forums a while ago that Etsy was also charging sellers extra for packages that did not meet specifications of shipping. Some sellers with records of what they sent, said that what they sent was different from what what they were charged as "under reported" by USPS and they were unfairly charged.

I once had an Amazon return of a small book I sent by media mail returned by Priority Mail from across the country, and about $9.00 was deducted from my account.
