Amazon Changes Background Colors, Mystifying Sellers

By: Ina Steiner

Sellers on industry discussion boards are mystified after noticing Amazon has changed the background colors of certain product detail pages.

In one post on the Amazon boards, a seller pointed to such a page for a pickup for an electric guitar. One seller saw the normal white background, another said, "I'm seeing the different color background on some listings but not all."

The original poster shared screenshots showing two product pages with pastel backgrounds instead of white (you can see for yourself on the discussion thread on Amazon). Sellers on a private group were also mystified after a seller shared a product page showing the same pale violet/purple colored background.

It may seem like a small thing, but sellers and brands spend a lot of time optimizing their product photos - the original poster on the Amazon thread said the colored background looked bad with the white A+ content images. Not to mention sellers do not like surprises.

Have you noticed background colors changing on Amazon product pages, and do you have any theories about why Amazon might wish to do that?

A.  Bored code singer ‘teams’ trying to justify their jobs.

B.  Amazon’s prepping for spring with a pastel pallet.

C.  Somebody read somewhere in class about the subliminal effects of color upon consumer behavior and they have a handy supply of ‘test subjects’ to try it out on.

D.  The best way to camouflage what isn’t visible is to change something that is, so THAT becomes a focus instead.
