I was teaching math at the American InterContinental University in Illinois when I decided to start selling in Amazon’s store to generate a little extra income. I called my store Pandaloon, and I filled it with fun, panda-themed gifts. Amazon made it easy for me to list new products, find customers, and quickly ship orders, and after several months, my little side hustle grew into a sustainable business that generated more income every month.

The company’s annual U.S. Small Business Empowerment Report, issued Tuesday (May 23), shows that 60% of sales on Amazon’s stores come from independent sellers, most of which are small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). The report showed that these sellers sold 4.1 billion products last year, with sellers in rural areas seeing more than 40% year-over-year sales growth.

In 2023, Amazon achieved 12 percent year-over-year net sales revenue growth whereas eBay's year-over-year revenue increased by three percent. The two e-commerce giants are direct competitors in the U.S. online shopping landscape. In 2015, online payment provider PayPal split from eBay to become an independent company, which had an effect on eBay’s overall revenue development.

Temu is the dollar store of online platforms, and it has marketplaces like eBay, Amazon, and Etsy on the run. That means sellers should also be paying attention to the platform, because it could have a direct impact on their sales, if it hasn’t already had a negative impact.

Amazon is firing on all cylinders in India’s e-commerce market on the back of its expanding seller base, driven by its robust programs focused on uplifting local shops, small offline stores, and small and medium businesses (SMBs). This is evident from the company’s latest announcement regarding the number of sellers on amazon.in. Notably, the number has now exceeded the mark of 10 lakh, which stood at 100 at the time of the commencement of Amazon’s e-commerce business in India.

Amazon.com Inc uses "aggregated data" from sellers in its third-party marketplace to improve its overall business, the online retailer said in response to a congressional antitrust probe that could raise concerns with such sellers. Such data, also culled from public sources and Amazon's first-party sales, is available to the company's retail and private brand teams, it said in an Oct. 11 document released by the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.

Not only are the promotional days great excitement for shoppers, they're also great business for Amazon. Amazon's July iteration of Prime Days, which ran from July 11-12, 2023, brought in a record $12.7 billion in sales. "The first day of Prime Day was the single largest sales day ever on Amazon," Amazon wrote when the event closed, adding "Prime Day 2023 was also the biggest Prime Day event ever for independent sellers, whose sales growth in Amazon’s store outpaced Amazon's retail business."

The Wall Street Journal on Thursday published a report detailing how Amazon used a shell company, Big River Services International, to spy on its rivals including eBay, Fedex, and Walmart. Amazon told Quartz that it vehemently denies that claim. Amazon said the idea that the company used “Project Curiosity”—later given a less conspicuous name, “Small Business Insights”—to snoop on its competitors is false.

The Amazon Southeast Asia Seller Summit 2022 returns for its fourth edition on 26-27 October 2022, with the theme 'Small Businesses, Big Ambitions' and a bigger focus to support sellers in Singapore to expand their businesses online, locally and globally. For the first time ever, the Summit will be held in a hybrid format – online via an Event App, and in person at the Marina Bay Sands Convention Center in Singapore.

The hardest part about selling on Amazon is, well, figuring out what to sell on Amazon. You may have what you think is a great idea for a product, but smart sellers rely on data — not always their gut instincts — for which products to invest in. This is especially true in May when customers shop for Spring and Summer items. This time of year is when the warmer weather and seasonal items start to pick up again — which sellers can take advantage of.
