First, “Made in China.” Retailers went to China to outsource manufacturing. Second, it was “Sold by China.” Chinese manufacturers sold through Amazon. Now, third, “Marketed by China.” Chinese companies are running vertically integrated retailers.

I asked Ken Freeman, a former Amazon seller turned consultant, if a brand could still make millions on that marketplace. “It’s hard but not impossible,” he told me. “Eight years ago you could get rich selling yoga mats.”


Two trends have emerged from big retailers’ Q4 earnings calls over the last several weeks: 1) inflation is weakening consumer demand; and 2) their advertising units are growing like crazy. This was especially true for Amazon and Walmart, who both had soft 2023 outlooks for their retail businesses while also showing highly profitable and fast-growing ad units.


Amazon has made approximate sales for each product public on its website and app. The new metric is social proof that helps popular products stand out. Amazon is testing a new product label that highlights how many sales it has had recently. For example, “100K+ bought in past month.”


Amazon's third-party seller services grew 24% on a currency-neutral basis last quarter. Merchants are paying around 50% of their revenue to Amazon just to sell on the marketplace. There are several indications that Amazon could keep raising its prices.


As an operations manager at an Amazon facility in Smyrna, Georgia, Wortham, 31, was responsible for supervising workers, managing productivity, and making sure all the day's operations ran smoothly. She could oversee how orders got sorted and packed into the familiar smirking box, and coordinate with delivery service partners, or DSPs—third-party delivery companies that Amazon contracts to drive for it.


Amazon raised the cost of fulfilling orders through its Multi-Channel Fulfillment service (MCF). The third-party logistics solution is designed to let merchants leverage its network to fulfill off-Amazon orders (“to power their growth beyond Amazon.com”).


Amazon rules the roost when it comes to e-commerce, with its marketplace outpacing everyone else when it comes to gross merchandise value, reach and market capitalization. That fact inevitably makes it a big part of how millions of brands and retailers sell goods online. Threecolts, a London startup founded by an ex-Amazon exec that builds software for brands and retailers to manage their Amazon sales channel, has picked up some 22,000 customers since it first set up shop in 2021.


In 2021 my company Veeqo was acquired by Amazon. Just over a year later, we teamed up to announce the opening of Amazon’s first corporate office in Wales. Our new premises, home to the Veeqo team and some of our colleagues from Amazon, is based in Swansea city centre. There was never a question that it would be based anywhere else.
